‘Scream’ Reboot Scheduled for 2022 Release by Paramount
Paramount Pictures has decided to release its untitled ‘Scream” reboot on Jan. 14, 2022, at the start of the MLK holiday weekend while pushing back three other titles by a year.

Courteney Cox will reprise her role as news reporter Gale Weathers in the reboot along with David Arquette returning to play Sheriff Dewey Riley. Spyglass Media Group and Paramount have said filming is expected to begin later this year in Wilmington, N.C. “Ready or Not” directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are helming the reboot from a script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

The studio also announced it will release its untitled Billie Holiday movie, directed by Lee Daniels, on Feb. 12, 2021. Paramount bought the project, starring Andra Day, in July when it was called “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.”

Johnny Depp Files for Defamation Case Delay to Film ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’

Johnny Depp Files for Defamation Case Delay to Film ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’
Actor Johnny Depp has filed documents at the Fairfax Country, Virginia, court to delay the defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, so that he can proceed with filming for his role in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 3” in London.

Depp sued Heard in March, 2019, over an op-ed piece she wrote for the Washington Post titled “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change” where he is not named. Under Virginia law, where the Post is printed, plaintiffs can sue for defamation by inference.

The court’s current dates for the trial are Jan. 11 through Jan. 28, 2021. However, Warner Bros. is planning to commence principal photography for “Fantastic Beasts 3” from October in London and will finish only by the end of February 2021. Depp has requested the court to delay the hearing to a period between March and June, 2021.

‘Critical Thinking’ Review: John Leguizamo’s Inspirational High-School Chess Drama

‘Critical Thinking’ Review: John Leguizamo’s Inspirational High-School Chess Drama
“Critical Thinking” is one of those up-from-the-streets high-school competition movies where just mentioning the true story it’s based on kind of gives the game away. Set in 1998, it’s about the five chess wizards from Miami Jackson High who became the first inner-city chess team to win the National Championship. Boom! But, of course, it’s how they got there that matters, and even if this movie weren’t based on a true story, you’d know more or less know where it’s going. “Critical Thinking” has some appealing young actors, and it’s been directed, by John Leguizamo (who costars as the film’s tough-saint teacher), in a way that gives them the space to clown around and then get serious.

Leguizamo plays Mario Martinez, who teaches an elective class in chess at Miami Jackson, where his students call him “Mr. T.” They’re a rowdy, bellicose,

‘Tezuka’s Barbara’ Review: Erotic Manga Adaptation Is Visually Striking but Emotionally Undercooked

‘Tezuka’s Barbara’ Review: Erotic Manga Adaptation Is Visually Striking but Emotionally Undercooked
Based on a ’70s manga by Japanese master Osamu Tezuka, a bored writer’s affair with his beguiling young muse gets the live-action treatment in “Tezuka’s Barbara.” Primarily concerned with the story’s excursions into erotic surrealism and the occult while playing down its social and political themes, this handsomely packaged item isn’t deep or meaningful but does present a visually arresting account of middle-aged male ennui colliding with uninhibited and irresistible female energy. Sure to be welcomed by Tezuka’s large fan base in Japan, “Barbara” has enjoyed a lengthy festival run since bowing in competition at the Tokyo Film Festival.

One of several adults-only tales by the legendary creator of children’s classics “Astro Boy” and “Kimba the White Lion,” “Barbara” first appeared in Big Comic magazine in 1973 and was long considered unfilmable. It has finally been adapted by Tezuka’s eldest son, Macoto Tezka, a highly

Amy Hill’s Sci-Fi Film ‘Comisery’ Is the Only Zoom Call Worth Taking

Amy Hill’s Sci-Fi Film ‘Comisery’ Is the Only Zoom Call Worth Taking
In the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, Amy Hill packed her bags in Hollywood and returned home to her family in Hawaii, thinking she would quarantine there. But the actor-comedian’s short-lived break from production came to an end with a surprise Zoom call in April.

Hill, 67, stars in director Quentin Lee’s sci-fi feature “Comisery” as a Japanese American psychiatrist based in, ironically, Hawaii. Having previously collaborated with Lee in the webseries “Comedy InvAsian,” she didn’t hesitate to sign on to be the lead in an experimental project filmed entirely over Zoom.

“I’ve played a psychiatrist, therapist before, so the challenge, for me, was figuring out how this is a different character than the ones I’ve played before,” the veteran actor tells Variety. “Now that I’m getting older, my time is more valuable, because I have fewer moments left in life. So I don

Michael B. Jordan Honors Chadwick Boseman: ‘I’m Dedicating the Rest of My Days to Live the Way You Did’
Michael B. Jordan has shared a touching tribute to his “Black Panther” co-star Chadwick Boseman, following the actor’s shocking death due to colon cancer on Aug. 28.

The two starred together in the blockbuster “Black Panther,” which made Boseman a household name, in addition to the star of Marvel’s first Black superhero film. Jordan played the villain Erik Killmonger, who faced off against Black Panther and was revealed to be his long-lost cousin.

The two actors knew each other long before they shared the screen together. In a 2018 Howard University commencement speech, Boseman said he turned down a role on “All My Children” early in his career because of the stereotypical depiction of the character. Coincidentally, Jordan ended up being recast in the role when he was 16.

“You showed me how to be better, honor purpose, and create legacy. And whether you’ve known it or not…I’ve been watching,

Peyton Reed Says ‘Ant-Man 3’ Will Be “Bigger” and “More Sprawling”
It’s been over a year since the Avengers defeated Thanos, the ultimate galactic threat, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop getting new Marvel movies anytime soon. In addition to upcoming films like Black Widow, Eternals, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, production is underway on a third Ant-Man film featuring global treasure Paul Rudd as the titular occasionally tiny / occasionally gigantic superhero. Series director Peyton Reed offered an update on the sequel during an interview on SiriusXM's The Jess Cagle Show, and while he wasn’t able to say much (Marvel …

Thousands Sign Petition for Chadwick Boseman Statue to Replace Confederate Memorial in His Hometown

Thousands Sign Petition for Chadwick Boseman Statue to Replace Confederate Memorial in His Hometown
More than 7,900 people have signed a petition calling for a statue of Chadwick Boseman to replace a Confederate memorial in Anderson, S.C., the late “Black Panther” star’s hometown.

On Friday, Boseman died after a private, four-year battle with colon cancer, shocking many fans around the world. He was 43.

“The Confederate Monument belongs in a museum but has no right to be displayed there,” the petition reads. “I believe the community should come together to honor someone from Anderson, South Carolina, that was able to change the movie industry. He opened many doors for many young Black people with his leading roles in movies such as ‘Black Panther’ or ‘Marshall.’ It is only natural that his hometown honors what he did. There is no need for political controversy in this decision.”

Due to the state’s Heritage Act, it is illegal to remove the monument without approval from the South Carolina Senate.

‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ Tops Multiple VOD Charts as Chadwick Boseman Films Soar
The Premium VOD debut of United Artists’ “Bill & Ted Face the Music” topped charts from the moment it debuted August 28. As a mid-budget title that’s thriving at $19.99, it could be as important as “Tenet” in determining the shape of movie distribution. “Bill & Ted” didn’t see much theatrical play, but given its day-and-date debut it also didn’t have the option. About 1,000 independent theaters did play the title, where by our estimate it grossed around $1.1 million, or around $1,000 per theater.

That’s not a lot, but it’s better than Searchlight’s theater-only flop “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Based on those two performances, UA made the right move: Searchlight devoted marketing spend to a disappointheatrical release that now must wait until November before it can play VOD.

“Bill & Ted” was first on all three possible charts. “Fatima” (Picturehouse), the other new PVOD entry, appeared on two.

‘Watchmen’ Director Stephen Williams Breaks Down the Making of His Striking Hooded Justice Episode
The game-changing comic series Watchmen defied all the rules and every expectation to become one of the most celebrated and beloved “superhero” stories of all time. It’s only fitting that to pull off the impossible – a sequel series that lived up to the original material -- HBO’s Watchmen would have to do the same. Created by Damon Lindelof, the 9-episode series lovingly reinvented and updated the world created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, picking up with the iconic “old testament” characters (as the creative team called them) decades later, introducing new characters to share the screen …
